The idea of having a pair of headphones devoid of any sort of fixed wires or attachments has been around since the early days of Bluetooth and wireless communication systems.  The problem back then is the same problem that we have today; and without wires there needs to be some way to deliver power while being able to balance the power usage of a device that will weigh more and last less while over the ears.  One boost that we have seen in the recent years has actually aided just about every sort of industry out there – and it has to do with battery technology.  Batteries just keep getting better and better.

Typical lead acid batteries are going out of style.  It is not that they don’t work well – they simply don’t recharge like other types of chemistry and they are costly in the long run.  A modern battery uses Lithium Ion type cells, which have a quick charge rate and a controller discharge rate.  This allows them to be very efficient – even in high powered devices.  Boost technology is also used to push more voltage out of them for specific needs, and electric cars are made possible because of it.
